Pedagogical mastery of an English for specific purposes teacher in the context of leadership positions in education

Abstract

Стаття присвячена обговоренню необхідності зміни деяких вимог до кваліфікації викладача англійської мови під впливом зміни підходів до викладання / вивчення англійської мови для конкретних цілей. Авторами розглянуто деякі актуальні проблеми навчання в аграрних університетів, оскільки вони стоять окремо від гуманітарних чи технічних університетів і мають свої особливості. Розглянувши деякі сучасні підходи до навчання, автори зосереджуються на компетентнісному підході, який зараз активно поширюється в середній школі. Із застосуванням компетентнісного підходу слід змінити деякі аспекти навчального процесу та приділити більше уваги потребам студента. Педагогічна майстерність викладача полягає в його здатності постійно мотивувати учнів самостійно вивчати англійську мову, шукати необхідні матеріали без допомоги вчителя, вміти критично оцінювати нову інформацію, опрацьовувати свою власну точку зору на зміст. Обов’язком викладача є допомогти кожному студенту знайти власний алгоритм вивчення англійської мови та розробити особисту стратегію оволодіння знаннями. Автори пропонують приділити більше уваги самостійному читанню фахових текстів, що формують та розвивають читацьку компетентність студента. Крім того, необхідно навчити студентів письмовому спілкуванню засобами мережі Інтернет, таким чином формуючи та розвиваючи компетентність у письмовій формі. Більше уваги слід приділяти соціальним та культурним аспектам навчання, оскільки це допомагає зберегти зацікавленість студентів до вивчення англійської мови. Знання звичаїв та способів комунікативної поведінки потенційних партнерів сприяє розвитку спільного взаєморозуміння бізнесу та ефективної співпраці в майбутньому.

The article is devoted to discussion of the necessity in changing of some requirements to a higher school English teacher’s qualification under the influence of changing approaches to teaching/learning English for specific purposes. In the context of leadership in education some urgent problems of ESP teaching of agrarian universities students are under the authors’ consideration as agrarian universities stand apart from humanitarian or technical universities and have their own peculiarities. Having reviewed some modern approaches to ESP teaching the authors concentrate on competence approach which is now actively spreading at secondary school. With implementation of competence approach certain aspects of ESP teaching process are to be changed and more attention should be paid to student’s needs. To gain leadership positions in teaching pedagogical mastery of an ESP teacher lies now in his/her ability to constantly motivate students to learn English independently, look for necessary materials without teacher’s assistance, be able to critically evaluate the new information, work out his/her own viewpoint on the content. ESP teacher’s duty is to help each student find his own algorithm of learning English and work out a personal strategy of mastering knowledge of the target language. The authors propose to pay more attention to independent reading of professional texts forming and developing in such a way student’s reading competence. Besides it is necessary to teach students written communication via the Internet and in this way to form and develop competence in writing. More attention should be paid to social and cultural aspects of ESP teaching as it helps keep students’ interest to learning English.
