Abstract: Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has already caused pervasive pollution. To appreciate the scale of the problem, identify its causes and consequences, and develop strategies and practical counter measures, we present a comprehensive picture of soil pollution with more detailed analysis in Kharkiv, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. The intensity of contamination depends on location, industrial development and the course of military operations. In the east of the country, illegal dumping of chemical waste as well as active hostilities have caused significant soil contamination with heavy metals and oil products: Kharkiv region showed a 200% increase in cadmium contamination; Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions showed a 139% and 156% increase in oil spills; all with serious consequences for public and environmental health.
